Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) successfully synchronized Unit 2 back into the Mindanao grid just six days after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake forced an emergency shutdown of both generating units, restoring 105 MW of baseload capacity to the island's power supply.
Engineering teams worked around the clock inspecting boiler supports, turbine alignment, and switchyard equipment for seismic damage before clearing the unit for restart. No structural damage was found on Unit 2, allowing a faster return to service than initially projected.
"The team's priority from hour one was a safe restart, not a fast one. Getting Unit 2 synchronized this quickly is a credit to the inspection protocols we have in place and to the people who carried them out under difficult conditions," said SEC's plant manager.
Unit 1 remained offline for further inspection following the earthquake, with SEC targeting a restoration timeline in the days after Unit 2's return to service.
